CART UNIT VOLUNTEERS

Animal Care Services is looking for highly motivated volunteers to come on board for our newly formed (Community Animal Response Team) CART Unit.

Volunteers should have at least (5) years or more of experience in physically handling and transporting large animals such as cattle, horses, donkeys, goats, sheep etc.  Volunteers are expected to be in good physical shape that permits them to perform the responsibilities that they will be assigned to do.

The CART Unit volunteers will assist in responding to disaster areas and be responsible for caring-feeding and assessing the health of animals that have been left on properties with the owners that have been evacuated.

The CART Unit volunteers may be requested to remove large animals during a disaster related incident from homes, ranches and farms.  Having the required (5) years of experience in hooking up trucks & stock or horse trailers, loading large animals into stock or horse trailers and backing & driving the loaded trailers is a huge benefit to the CART Unit while in a disaster incident.

During a disaster incident CART Unit volunteers will be escorted into the disaster areas responding to homes, ranches or farm properties by either the Sheriff Department Deputies, Search & Rescue Staff or Fire Department Personnel.

CART Unit volunteers will be outfitted with personal protective equipment (gloves, glasses, headlamps, and flashlights), uniform-pants & shirts and whistles.   Protective helmets, tyvex outer wear, hand held radios and first aid kits will be issued to volunteers when dispatched into disaster areas.  Volunteers will be required to have their own work boots (leather & sturdy) with preferably a vibram sole.

Through North Coast Opportunities (NCO) CART Unit volunteers will be deemed as a Disaster Service Worker. Disaster Service Workers - (CART Unit Volunteers) that get injured while participating in authorized disaster-related activities that include pre-approved training are eligible to receive compensation benefits.

Please go the below link to sign up with North Coast Opportunities (NCO) and start the process in becoming a CART Unit volunteer.  Please specify in the "Volunteer & Skills" section of the volunteer application that you're  interested in becoming a CART Unit Volunteer.
