The County of Mendocino is a vast and varied geographical territory located on California's North Coast with a sparse population. The county consists of nearly 4,000 square miles of rocky coast, rugged coastal mountains, forests, and grasslands interspersed with fertile inland valleys. Elevations within the County range from sea level to nearly 7,000 feet. With only four incorporated cities, the county has a rural character, and most of the roughly 91,000 residents live in or near the wildland-urban interface. Given its rural nature, relative remoteness, and limited resources; the County is vulnerable to natural disasters. Preventing the adverse effects of natural disasters through proactive mitigation efforts is a key goal for the County. The County coordinates with numerous local, state, and federal partners to strengthen community resilience and preparedness.
