If you're unsure whether to report suspected abuse, please call our hotline at (877) 327-1799. Our trained professionals can provide guidance and support in making the right decision.
Your Report Matters
Every report can help protect vulnerable adults. If you see something, say something. Together, we can make a difference.
Abuse can take many forms, and its effects can be devastating. Here are common types of elder and dependent adult abuse:
Physical Abuse
- Unexplained Injuries: Look for injuries that seem unusual or asymmetrical, such as bruises, or marks on both sides of the body.
- Broken Bones: Frequent fractures, sprains, or dislocations.
- Medication Issues: Reports of drug overdoses, signs that medication isn't being taken regularly or missing medication.
- Damaged Eyewear: Broken glasses or frames.
- Restraint Marks: Signs of being restrained, like rope marks on wrists.
- Caregiver Control: Caregiver refuses to let you see the elder alone.
Neglect
-
Weight Loss: Noticeable weight loss, malnutrition, or dehydration.
-
Untreated Health Issues: Physical problems that go untreated, such as bed sores.
-
Unsanitary Living Conditions: Living spaces that are extremely dirty or unsafe.
-
Inappropriate Clothing: Wearing unsuitable clothing for the weather.
-
Unsafe Environment: Hazards present in the living area.
Mental Suffering
-
Abusive Behavior: Caregiver behavior that is threatening, belittling, or overly controlling.
-
Changes in Elder’s Behavior: Signs that mimic dementia, such as rocking, mumbling, or withdrawal.
Financial Abuse
-
Large Withdrawals: Significant or unusual withdrawals from the elder’s accounts.
-
Sudden Financial Changes: Rapid changes in the elder’s financial situation.
-
Missing Items: Cash or possessions missing from the elder’s home.
-
Suspicious Document Changes: Unexplained changes in wills, power of attorney, or financial policies.
-
Inconsistent Transactions: Financial activities that the elder could not have performed, like ATM withdrawals when bedridden.
Self Neglect
Failure of an elder or dependent adult to adequately care for their own health, safety, or basic needs, resulting in or creating a risk of harm. This may include inadequate food, shelter, clothing, personal hygiene, medical care, or protection from health and safety hazards.
If you observe any of these warning signs, it's important to take action. Contact the Mendocino County Adult & Aging Services hotline at (877) 327-1799 for guidance and support. Your observations could help protect someone in need.
Reporting Suspected Abuse
When making a report, please consider the following:
- Observation: Did you witness the suspected abuse?
- Report: Has someone else informed you about the suspected abuse?
- Suspicion: Do you have concerns based on your observations or knowledge?
Reports are essential for initiating support services that help elders and dependent adults live safely in their homes. In some cases of substantiated abuse, intervention by law enforcement may occur, which could include relocating the victim to a safer environment. Most cases involve support as our goal is to avoid relocation unless absolutely necessary.
Our team is here to assist you through the reporting process. If you're unsure about whether to report, we encourage you to call us. Together, we can ensure that our elders and dependent adults remain safe and comfortable in their community.
