Public Engagement

Overview

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors values public participation and encourages all residents to take an active role in the County's decision-making process. Public involvement helps ensure that the Board hears a variety of perspectives from residents, businesses, and community members throughout Mendocino County as they consider the items on the Agenda before them.

Members of the public can participate in a variety of ways, including attending Board meetings in person or remotely, providing public comments verbally or in writing, or simply by watching meetings live or on demand. Whether you are interested in a specific agenda item, have a matter you would like to bring to the Boards attention, or simply want to stay informed about County business, there are multiple ways to provide your input and remain engaged in matters that directly affect Mendocino County communities.

Attend a Board of Supervisors Meeting

Board of Supervisors meetings are open to the public and may be attended in person or remotely via Zoom. Agendas, along with all corresponding attachments, are available on the Agendas and Minutes page once published.

Attending in Person

Regular Meetings are typically held in the Board of Supervisors Chambers, located at 501 Low Gap Road in Ukiah, CA. 95482 at 9:00AM - though they may occasionally be held in alternate locations throughout the County. Before attending, always confirm the physical meeting location(s) listed on the front page of the published agenda. See below for information on providing comments.

Attending Remotely via Zoom

Zoom Webinar information, along with a clickable link to join the webinar, can be found on the front page of the Agenda right below the physical meeting location. See below for information on providing comments.

Provide Public Comments

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors provides multiple methods of submitting your comments on agenda items. Comments can be submitted in writing, verbally during the live meeting, or even via voicemail if you wish to provide comments verbally but will be unable to attend the live meeting.

Submit Written Public Comments:

The County's eComment feature becomes available after the agenda is published, and allows members of the public to submit written comments directly for individual agenda items.

To submit an eComment:

  1. Access the Agendas and Minutes page
  2. Find the appropriate meeting date, and click on the "eComment" link for that meeting date in the far right column
  3. Sign in, or Sign Up if you do not have an existing account
  4. Select the agenda item on which you wish to comment
  5. Type out your comments in the submission box and click "Submit Comment"

Alternatively, Members of the public may also submit written comments to the Board of Supervisors by email at BOS@mendocinocounty.gov. Comments received by email are maintained as part of the official public record and are provided to the Board of Supervisors for consideration. However, email comments are not posted to the eComment system and are not publicly viewable through the County's website or accessible via the agenda.

Important Additional Information about Written Comments

Comments submitted via eComment are provided to the Board of Supervisors for consideration and become part of the public record immediately. Once submitted, comments are publicly accessible to all through the eComment page for that meeting. While you can read public comments left by other members of the public, all written comments should be addressed to the Board of Supervisors and should not be used to engage in dialogue with or respond directly to other commenters.

While there is no deadline to submit an eComment or written comment via email, members of the public are encouraged to submit comments by the evening before the meeting, whenever possible, to allow the Board of Supervisors adequate time to review all written comments in advance of the meeting.

Provide Verbal Public Comments:

Members of the public may address the Board:

  • During Public Expression, for matters within the Board's jurisdiction that are not on the agenda.
    • Public Expression is typically heard at the start of the meeting, following the Roll Call and Pledge of Allegiance. When recognized by the Chair, speakers are generally provided up to three (3) minutes to address the Board.
  • During Public Comment, for matters that are on the Agenda.
    • Public Comment is opened for each individual item, and will be heard before the Board takes action on the item. Members of the public may comment only on the item currently under consideration and are generally provided up to three (3) minutes per agenda item.

Note: No speaker form or advance registration is required to provide verbal comments. Members of the public who wish to speak may do so when the Chair opens Public Expression or Public Comment for the applicable agenda item. See step-by-step instructions for addressing the Board below.
