Mendocino County Recognizes June 2026 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month

Ukiah, CA - The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed June 2026 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, reaffirming the County’s longstanding commitment to protecting our community’s elders and dependent adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

The Board has consistently recognized this important issue through annual proclamations since 2017. The observance aligns with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), established on June 15, 2006, and reflects California’s commitment to dedicating the entire month of June to raising awareness and promoting prevention efforts. Additionally, you will see the Mendocino County Department of Social Services, Adult & Aging Services (AAS) division in our community throughout the month with important information, resources, and support.

The proclamation supports Mendocino County’s Strategic Plan Priority of building “A Prepared and Resilient County,” recognizing that elder and dependent adult abuse affects individuals across all communities, socioeconomic groups, and geographic regions.

National studies estimate that one in ten older or dependent adults experiences abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Despite the prevalence of these crimes, most incidents go unreported. Research indicates that for every case reported to protective agencies, nearly 24 cases remain hidden. Financial exploitation is even less likely to be reported, with only one in 44 cases coming to the attention of authorities.

As Mendocino County’s population continues to age, Adult Protective Services (APS) programs are experiencing increasing demand. Community awareness and advocacy remain critical to ensuring vulnerable adults receive the protections and services they deserve.

Locally, the need for intervention continues to grow. In 2025, Mendocino County APS received 1,623 reports of suspected elder or dependent adult abuse and neglect, compared to 1,230 reports in 2021—an increase of more than 30 percent over five years. Reports originated from communities throughout the county, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.

Mendocino County APS social workers provide emergency response and protective services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Community members play a vital role in these efforts by recognizing signs of abuse and reporting concerns through the county’s toll-free APS reporting line at 1-877-327-1799.

Preventing abuse requires more than intervention after harm has occurred. Maintaining and strengthening community resources such as senior centers, nutrition programs, transportation services, and social support networks helps reduce isolation and allows older and dependent adults to remain safe, independent, and connected.

By recognizing June as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, Mendocino County seeks to educate residents about the many forms abuse can take, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, self-neglect, abandonment, and financial exploitation.
